My Response on The Crush (2010), directed by Michael Creagh is evidence of my learning of film techniques in this course, specifically of mise-en-scene. This response showcases my first scene analysis and taught me that everything shown within the frame, from the clothes a character is wearing to their body positioning, has a purpose and is intentional. In fact, the understanding of mise-en-scene and the basic components of good filmmaking that I gained from this response framed how I viewed films and approached the weekly responses for the rest of the semester. I often referred back to this essay when searching for new ways to look at the films shown in class. The more I studied and searched for mise-en-scene, the easier it became to see the art behind films themselves which is why I believe this response is one of the most important pieces of evidence in my portfolio as it began my understanding of film itself.
