Detachment (2011) is a film about a Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who constantly leaves school districts after short periods of time so that he doesn't bond with the students and teachers he meets. When he lands a job in a school of burned-out teachers, he unwillingly becomes a role model and voice for the apathetic students in his class and even bonds with a teenage runaway. I love this film because it feels like a documentary that is taking viewers into a school and showing how these teachers became who they are. Instead of judging them or glorifying them, the film lets us see them in all of their weakness and flaws. It's a reflection of the apathy and disillusionment we will all face within our lives in regards to our jobs and dreams with an ending that will break your heart.
