I chose American Beauty (1999) as evidence of learning because it's one of the films that had the greatest impact on me and allowed me to apply film to the real world, thus relating it beyond our classroom discussions. In my response, I examine how Sam Mendes utilized his film to critique aspects of American culture and values, such as materialism and idealized beauty. I also explored the beautiful and brilliant mise-en-scene techniques used throughout the film. My favorite technique was the use of purposeful positioning within the frame, specifically with shots that visually captured how and what imprisoned each character. In addition to its great story and visually entrancing scenes, this film made me question my own values and (lack) of happiness, reminding me to notice "the beauty in the world" and to take nothing in life for granted.
