Singin' in the Rain (1952) is the only classic film/musical I chose to place in my portfolio because not only did it make me happy, but it taught me about "Hollywood conventions and traditions, most of which are still relevant today." In my response, I analyzed how this film showcased the historical transition from silent films to talkies through romance and comedy. I was also able to investigate the ways in which this film has become a part of the cultural lexicon, influencing other films and/or visual mediums today, such as through the horrific rendering of the title song, "Singin' in the Rain" in Stanley Kubrick's film, A Clockwork Orange (1971). Without my response to this film, I most likely never would have known about the transition or the problems experienced when films started to integrate sound; moreover, I also wouldn't have seen how film and culture are constantly shaping and reflecting each other.
